Randolph M. Probstfield was born in Germany in 1832. He migrated to the United States as a young man and came to the Red River Valley as an agent for the Hudson Bay Company in 1858. He operated the company trading post in Shayenne City (later Georgetown), Minnesota for several years, before buying land for a farm in which is now part of Clay County. Probstfield later served in the legislature, helped develop the Moorhead Normal School, and was active for a time in the farmers' movement in the Va...

Raymond Gesell was owner of one of the oldest farms in the Red River Valley, the Probstfield Old Trail Farm north of Moorhead. Gesell was involved in local politics and civic activities before representing Clay County in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 1945 to 1951.
